Kurt's practice focuses on cost recovery litigation under federal and state Superfund laws and insurance recovery for environmental liabilities. He has recovered significant cleanup costs from other responsible parties in contribution actions and from claims under historic insurance policies. In addition to litigation sucesses, he also has helped clients reach favorable results in allocation arbitration and mediation. Kurt has expertise in locating and evaluating potentially valuable insurance assets that may cover environmental cleanup costs. His clients have recovered millions of dollars in previously unidentified and untapped insurance resources. Kurt also has helped many clients navigate through the environmental cleanup process and efficiently resolve liabilities at federal and state hazardous waste cleanup sites.

Kurt co-authored the "Washington" chapter of the American Bar Association book Brownfields: A Comprehensive Guide to Redeveloping Contaminated Property (2nd. Ed.) and the "Minimizing Hazardous Waste Liability" chapter of the Washington State Bar Association Real Property Deskbook. He also served as an editor of the WSBA Deskbook. Kurt authored numerous chapters of the AWB Environmental Compliance Handbook, including sections on the Model Toxics Control Act, sediment cleanups, risk assessments, and toxic torts. Before joining us in 2003, Kurt was an Assistant Attorney General at the Ecology Division of the Washington State Office of the Attorney General.

Outside of work, Kurt enjoys downhill skiing, mountain biking, and traveling with his wife, Suzanne.

Kurt graduated cum laude from the Willamette University College of Law and received his B.A. from the University of Washington.
